The Origin The story of Wynkoop Athletics is the classic entrepreneurial leap: Ryan and Bailey VanVoorhis, two college business majors who traded the security of full-time jobs to go “all in” on a shared passion. Six years ago, they opened their doors with a simple question: “How are we going to make rent?” They broke even in three months and haven’t looked back.
The Philosophy Located in Denver’s River North (RiNo) Art District, Wynkoop has transitioned from a standard affiliate model to an independent functional fitness gym. Their programming targets the “intermediate athlete”—designed to make members faster and stronger, with room to scale up for the advanced or down for the beginner.
The founders manage a staff of 12 coaches and run a schedule of six classes a day. The routine is a mix of strength skills and metabolic conditioning, but the core business rule is cultural: “Leave the ego at the door.”
The Life This is a family operation in every sense. With two daughters at home, Ryan and Bailey split the daily workload—she coaches the mornings, he takes the nights.
In a neighborhood exploding with young professionals, Wynkoop has become a “third place” for its members. It is a safe harbor where intimidation is replaced by introduction, and where the competition is fierce but friendly—a dynamic mirrored by the founders themselves, who still jump into the same workouts to compete against one another.
