Bonfire Bookstore: Cultivating the third space

Woodstock, VA

The Origin For years, Kara Balcerzak viewed her dream of owning a bookstore and yarn shop as exactly that—just a dream. With a career rooted in the nonprofit sector, the mechanics of starting a business felt mysterious and out of reach. That changed when she connected with the Shenandoah County Chamber of Commerce and realized the support system she needed was right in her backyard. Discovering resources like the local business development center gave her the confidence to finally take the leap, and she hasn’t looked back since.

The Community Kara isn’t just selling paperbacks; she’s solving problems. When an older gentleman without internet access came in clutching a worn list of out-of-print titles that big-box stores in Harrison couldn’t help him with, Kara didn’t turn him away. She hopped on eBay, tracked down the used copies, and secured a customer for life. In a post-COVID world where isolation is at record levels, she sees her shop as a remedy, using book clubs and events to help neighbors exchange phone numbers and forge real friendships.

The Philosophy Conventional retail wisdom advised Kara to install uncomfortable wooden chairs so customers wouldn’t loiter without buying. She did the exact opposite. Prioritizing community over transaction speed, she filled the space with comfortable seating, board games, and “sit and stitch” sessions. From stocking hyper-local items like a spiral-bound native plant guide to offering eco-friendly bar shampoo, Kara curates her inventory to serve the specific values and needs of the people walking through her door.
